PHOTOGRAPHIC MUSINGS

Artist Statement

I photograph ordinary things which are hidden in plain sight. My images are mostly of landscapes or objects and shapes created by light and shadows. I go out and explore to see what catches my eye. No plan, but usually something turns up and once that happens a series of images fall into place. During these photowalks my observations reveal hidden worlds where reality and illusion exist side by side. Double exposures are used frequently in my compositions. For me each glance is naturally abstract and creates a narrative to record in my notebook. I am most interested in black and white images but color does have its place. Photography is really unlimited in its simplicity or complexity. I hope my images inspire you.

Presently none of my photography is for sale.

BIOGRAPHY

My Mother was a creative in the design world while my Father was a creative in business logistics. In my early teens my Grandfather gave me an old Agfa 120 film camera. My parents had an Argus C3. I learned the basics of photography using these two cameras. Later I got a Canon 35mm camera and began processing film and prints in my parent’s utility room. My first job after college was at Zipatone, Inc. shooting line art with Kodalith film on a room size reproduction camera. Next I spent a few years working as a cartographic technician. After that I spent the following 30 years in the woods designing and building recreational trails. This was the most creative period in my life. There are literally millions of people using the trails which I designed. During this time I discontinued photography except for work related snapshots. Recently, I ceased the working life and resumed photography as a leisure pursuit. I really don’t realize the scope of my creativity but my friends seem to appreciate it. I enjoy photographing city buildings as much as a scenic landscape, street life or intricate geometrics. Most days I am out roaming in search of images, writing poems and short stories or designing and building what I need to make my life enjoyably functional. I read this somewhere and it’s true, Photography has one take.

Admired Photographers: Kenneth Josephson, László Moholy-Nagy, Daido Moriyama and Edward Ruscha.
